In New Works, I will be showcasing my new abstracted figurative artworks. The acrylic and ink paintings are often self-portraits in which the body is removed from the image. Sources for these works are old photographs and staged photos. The hair, surrounding objects, and clothing become signifiers of the figure’s personality. The latest work in this series has evolved into a glimpse of the ongoing progress of self-discovery and interest in self-image regarding the body.

The piece above will be included in the show. I look forward to seeing you at the opening!

The Body: Power, Meaning & Representation in Contemporary Art

    at Washington State University

Image: Lace, ink and acrylic on paper, 40x50", 2018

I'm honored that my piece,% Lace,% is a part of Washington State University’s Department of Fine Arts' juried exhibition exploring ideas about the body. The show's statement is below:

"While authority over the human body has long been determined by gender and class, in today’s highly globalized and pluralistic contemporary art world, artists view the body as a malleable site of meaning and power, not as an archetype but as a performative instrument, a vessel to be filled and surface upon which the artist or viewer may project her own fears, desires and dreams. Featuring works across various media, including new media, photography, painting, video, performance, sculpture, installation, and intermedia."

Selected artists: Robin Arnitz, Saskia Baden, Christy Bailey, Claire Brandt, Dylan Collins, Stephen Deffet, Nicole Jean Hill, Mari Nagaoka, Sophie Neslund, and Lydia Panas.

Juried by June T Sanders and Ayanna Z Nayo.
